11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: June 17, 2012

First Reading (Ezekiel 17: 22–24)
A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel.
Thus states the Lord: "At the top of cedar I will take one of its upper-most branches, a tender twig and plant it. On a lofty, massive mountain, on a high mountain of Israel I will plant it. It will produce branches and bear fruit and become a magnificent cedar. Birds of all kinds will nest in it and find shelter in its branches. And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord, I who bring down the lofty tree and make the lowly tree tall. I will make the tree that is full of sap wither and the dry tree bloom. I, the Lord, have spoken and this will I do."

Second Reading (2 Corinthians 5: 6–10)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: So we feel confident always. We know that while living in the body, we wander away from the Lord, living by faith, without seeing; but we dare to think that we would rather be away from the body to go and live with the Lord. So, whether we have to keep this house or lose it, we only wish to please the Lord. Anyway we all have to appear before the tribunal of Christ for each one to receive what he deserves for his good or evil deeds in the present life.

Gospel (Mark 4: 26–34)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Jesus stated this to the crowd, "In the kingdom of God it is like this. A man scatters seed upon the soil. Whether he is asleep or awake, be it day or night, the seed sprouts and grows, he knows not how. The soil produces of itself; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when it is ripe for harvesting they take the sickle for the cutting: the time for harvest has come." Jesus additionally stated, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what shall we compare it? It is like a mustard seed which, when sown, is the smallest of all the seeds scattered upon the soil. But once sown, it grows up and becomes the largest of the plants in the garden and even grows branches so big that the birds of the air can take shelter in its shade." Jesus used many such stories or parables, to proclaim the word to them in a way they would be able to understand. He would not teach them without parables; but privately to his disciples he explained everything.

Priest: Jesus Christ, you returned to the Father to present to him a redeemed world. Christ, have mercy.
    Congregation: Christ, have mercy.

Priest: Lord Jesus, you live in the Father's glory and there you plead in our favor. Lord, have mercy.
    Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, and forgive us all our sins. Be with us every day you give us and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

Let us pray. O God, strength of those who hope in you, graciously hear our pleas, and since without you mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace, that in following your commands we may please you by our resolve and our deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  9. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 92) (Verses 2-3 and 13-16)
The response is: Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your grace in the morning, to declare your faithfulness at night.

The virtuous will flourish like palm trees, they will thrive like the cedars of Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they will prosper in the courts of our God.

In old age they will still bear fruit; they will stay fresh and green, to proclaim that the Lord is upright, "He is my Rock," they say, "he never fails."

    1. As Halon stated, the choir had made a mistake with the response to the psalm. They sang, "Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting." That is an equivocation to the natural response of "Lord, it is good to give thanks to you."

    2. Oh, wow. And I thought they would not make this mistake again.

  13. Priest: We sometimes forget that Jesus prayed not only for his apostles, but also for those who would come to believe in him through the apostles' preaching. Since we know Christ lives in us through his Spirit, let us unite in prayer, as we respond: Lord, fill our hearts.
    — That as co-workers with Christ we may accept our responsibility to make the Father's truth and love known in the world. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — That we may be courageous in criticizing those elements of modern life which threaten the dignity and destiny of human beings. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — That all men and women may come to realize their common dignity as your children and learn to treat one another as brothers and sisters, according to the teachings of the gospel. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — That all the members of your Church may live and work together in peace and harmony and be dedicated to their common mission as your apostles. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — That the suffering members of the community may know the comfort of your love, brought to them by those who are well, able and blessed to be the channels of your love. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — For our CCD teachers, that they will continue to give guidance and share their faith with our children, youths, and catechumens. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
    — Lord, in your Holy Name, obtain for us from your Heavenly Father, His providence of the Saint Peter Canisius International Catholic Parish. We pray to the Lord. Lord, fill our hearts.
Priest: Let us silently offer our personal intentions to the Father as well as all intentions stated at the beginning of this Mass.
We offer you these petitions, Father, in union with the prayer of your Son. Fill our hearts with the joy that comes from knowing you; renew in us the Spirit of truth, and give us sturdy hands to do your work and confident hearts to praise your name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  15. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For in you we live and move and have our being, and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care, but even now possess the pledge of life eternal. For having received the first fruits of the Spirit, through whom you raised up Jesus from the dead, we hope for an everlasting share in the Paschal Mystery. And so, with all the Angels, we praise you, as in joyful celebration we acclaim...

  16. As this reception of your Holy Communion, O Lord, foreshadows the union of the faithful in you, so may it bring about unity in your Church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  17. Bow your heads and pray for God's blessing.
Father, help your people to rejoice in the mystery of redemption and to win its reward. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.
And may the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come upon you and remain with you forever. Amen.
The Mass has ended, therefore, go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Thanks be to God.

  24. Primera Lectura (Ezequiel 17: 22–24)
