New American Bible readings
First reading (2 Chronicles 36: 14–16 and 19–23)
A reading from the second book of Chronicles.
In those days, all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added infidelity-to-infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations and polluting the LORD’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers, send his messengers to them, for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets, until the anger of the LORD against his people was so inflamed that there was no remedy. Their enemies burnt the house of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, set all its palaces afire, and destroyed all its precious objects. Those who escaped the sword were carried captive to Babylon, where they became servants of the king of the Chaldeans and his sons until the kingdom of the Persians came to power. All this was to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah: “Until the land has retrieved its lost Sabbaths, during all the time it lies waste it shall have rest while seventy years are fulfilled.” In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD inspired King Cyrus of Persia to issue this proclamation throughout his kingdom, both by word of mouth and in writing: “Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me, and he has also charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!”

Second reading (Ephesians 2: 4–10)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ — by grace you have been saved—raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

Gospel (John 3: 14–21)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus said to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

Furthermore, all the heads of the priesthood, and the people, too, were exceedingly unfaithful, following the disgusting example of the nations around them, and so they defiled the house which the Lord himself had made holy. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, continued to send prophets to warn his people, since he had compassion on them and on his dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, ignored his words, and laughed at his prophets, until at last the anger of the Lord rose so high against his people that there was no further remedy. They burned down the house of God, broke down the walls of Jerusalem, set fire to all its palaces, and destroyed everything of value in it. The survivors were deported by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon; they were to serve him and his descendants as slaves until the kingdom of Persia came to power. This is how the work of the Lord was fulfilled that he spoke through Jeremiah, "The land will lie desolate for seventy years, to make up for its Sabbath rests that have not been observed." And in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill what he had stated through the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue the following command and send it out in writing to be read aloud everywhere in his kingdom: "Thus speaks Cyrus king of Persia: the Lord, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has ordered me to build him a house in Jerusalem, in Judah. Now, all of you who belong to his people, go there and may the Lord your God be with you."

Second reading (Ephesians 2: 4–10)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
God, who is rich in mercy, revealed his immense love. As were dead through our sins, he give us life with Christ. By grace you have been saved! And he raised us to life with Christ, giving us a place with him in heaven. In showing us such kindness in Christ Jesus, God willed to reveal and unfolding in the coming ages the extraordinary riches of his grace. By the grace of God you have been saved through faith. This has not come from you: it is God's gift. This was not the result of your works, so you are not to feel proud. What we are is God's work. He has created us in Christ Jesus for the good works he has prepared that we should devote ourselves to them.

Gospel (John 3: 14–21)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus stated this to Nicodemus, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Yes, God so loved the world that gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. He who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God. This is how the Judgment is made: Light has come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For whoever does wrong hates the light and does not come to the light for fear that his deeds will be shown as evil. But whoever lives according to the truth comes into the light so that it can be clearly seen that his works have been done in God."

    The response is: Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you.

    By the strems of Babylon, we sat and then wept as we remembered Zion. When on the poplars, we hung our harps.

    Our captors asked for song. Our tormentors wanted songs of joy: "Sing to us one of the songs of Zion!"

    How can we sing the Lord's song in a strange and alien land? If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand fall useless!

    May my tongue cleave to my palate if I remember you not, if Jerusalem is not the first of my joys.

    Una lectura del segundo libro de Crónicas.
    También todos los jefes de Judá, los sacerdotes y el pueblo extremaron su infidelidad, siguiendo las prácticas infames de las naciones paganas y profanando el templo del Señor, que él había escogido como su santuario en Jerusalén. El Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, les envió constantes advertencias por medio de sus mensajeros, porque tenía compasión de su pueblo y de su lugar de residencia. Pero ellos se rieron de los mensajeros de Dios, despreciaron sus avisos y se burlaron de sus profetas, hasta que la ira del Señor estalló contra su pueblo de modo que ya no hubo remedio. Además quemaron el templo de Dios, derribaron la muralla de Jerusalén, prendieron fuego a sus palacios y destruyeron cuanto había de valor. Hizo esto para mostrar en los tiempos futuros el gran amor que nos profesa y su bondad para con nosotros en Cristo Jesús. Pues por la bondad de Dios habéis recibido la salvación por medio de la fe. No es esto algo que vosotros mismos hayáis conseguido, sino que os lo ha dado Dios. No es el resultado de las propias acciones, de modo que nadie puede jactarse de nada; pues Dios es quien nos ha hecho, quien nos ha creado en Cristo Jesús para que hagamos buenas obras, según lo que había dispuesto de antemano.

      Jesús le dijo a Nicodemo: “Y así como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así también el Hijo del hombre ha de ser levantado, para que todo el que cree en él tenga vida eterna. Tanto amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su Hijo único, para que todo aquel que cree en él no muera, sino que tenga vida eterna. Porque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo. El que cree en el Hijo de Dios no está condenado; pero el que no cree, ya ha sido condenado por no creer en el Hijo único de Dios. Los que no creen ya han sido condenados, pues, como hacían cosas malas, cuando la luz vino al mundo prefirieron la oscuridad a la luz. Todos los que hacen lo malo odian la luz, y no se acercan a ella para que no se descubra lo que están haciendo.     Ang pagbabasa sa pangalawang aklat ng mga Cronica.
    Sumamâ nang sumamâ ang mga pinuno ng Juda, ang mga pari at ang mga mamamayan. Tinularan nila ang kasuklam-suklam na gawain ng ibang bansa. Pati ang Templo sa Jerusalem na inilaan ni Yahweh para sa kanyang sarili ay kanilang nilapastangan. Gayunman, dahil sa habag ni Yahweh sa kanila at sa pagmamalasakit niya sa kanyang Templo, nagpatuloy siya sa pagpapadala ng mga sugo upang bigyan sila ng babala. Ngunit hinahamak lamang nila ang mga ito, pinagtatawanan ang mga propeta at binabaliwala ang mga babala ng Diyos. Dahil dito'y umabot sa sukdulan ang galit ni Yahweh sa kanyang bayan at hindi na sila makaiwas sa kanyang pagpaparusa.     Ebanghelyo (Juan 3: 14–21)

Sapagkat gayon na lamang ang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa sangkatauhan, kaya't ibinigay niya ang kanyang kaisa-isang Anak, upang ang sinumang sumampalataya sa kanya ay hindi mapahamak, kundi magkaroon ng buhay na walang hanggan. Isinugo ng Diyos ang kanyang Anak, hindi upang hatulan ng parusa ang sanlibutan, kundi upang iligtas ito sa pamamagitan niya. Hindi hinahatulan ng parusa ang sumasampalataya sa Anak. Ngunit hinatulan na ang hindi sumasampalataya, sapagkat hindi siya sumampalataya sa kaisa-isang Anak ng Diyos. Ganito ang paghatol ng Diyos: naparito sa sanlibutan ang ilaw, ngunit inibig pa ng mga tao ang dilim kaysa liwanag, sapagkat masasama ang kanilang mga gawa.
