2nd Sunday of Advent

Date: December 4, 2011

First Reading (Isaiah 40: 1–5 and 9–11)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Be comforted, my people, be strengthened, says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, proclaim to her that her time of bondage is at an end, that her guilt has been paid for, that from the hand of the Lord she has received double punishment for all her iniquity. A voice cries, "In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley will be raised up; every mountain and hill will be laid low. The stumbling blocks shall become level and the rugged places smooth. The glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mortals together will see it; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Go up onto the high mountain, messenger of Zion, lift up your voice with strength, fear not to cry aloud when you tell Jerusalem and announce to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes your God with might; his strong arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and here before him is his booty. Like a shepherd he tends his flock: he gathers the lambs in his arms, he carries them in his bosom, gently leading those that are with young."

Second Reading (2 Peter 3: 8–14)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Peter.
Do not forget, beloved, that with the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day. The Lord does not delay in fulfilling his promise, though some speak of delay; rather he gives you time because he does not want anyone to perish, but that all may come to conversion. The Day of the Lord is to come like a thief. Then the heavens will dissolve with a great noise; the elements will melt away by fire, and the earth with all that is on it will be burned up. Since all things are to vanish, how holy and religious your way of life must be, as you wait for the Day of God and long for its coming, when the heavens will dissolve in fire and the elements melt away in the heat. We wait for a new heaven and a new earth in which justice reigns, according to God's promise. Therefore, beloved, as you wait in expectation of this, strive that God may find you rooted in peace, without blemish or fault.

Gospel (Mark 1: 1–8)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
This is the beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in the book of Isaiah, the prophet, "I am sending my messenger ahead of you to prepare your way. Let the people hear the voice calling in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, level his paths." So John began to baptize in the desert; he preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All Judea and all the people from the city of Jerusalem went out to John to confess their sins and be baptized by him in the river Jordan. John was clothed in camel's hair and wore a leather garment around his waist. His food was locusts and honey. He preached to the people stating, "After me comes one who is more powerful than I am; I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. As for me, I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandals."

  2. The theme for the 2nd Sunday of Advent is to prepare the way of the Lord.

Isaiah stated in Chapter 40: Verse 3: "A voice cries, in the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

Priest: Father, as we journey down this Advent road, we relight the candle of hope, and we light a candle of peace. Grant us the courage to make peace: peace in our hearts, peace in our homes, and peace in our communities. Amen.

The father of the chosen family lights the two purple candles of the Advent Wreath. During that time, the choir will sing "Change My Heart Oh God".

This is a prayer led by the father or a male member of the family:
Dear God, when we are too weak to stand for what is right, when we behave irresponsibly, when we allow vices to control us and when we put our trust in persons, beliefs and rituals that are not from you — rescue us, Lord. Amen.

This is a prayer led by the mother or a female member of the family:
O God, deliver us from relying on false gods and wrong beliefs. From our pride and stubborn hearts and from our anger and resentments, humble our hearts and make us turn to you so that we may receive new life. Amen.

This is a prayer led by one of the children:
Dear Lord, when we do not realize the urgent need to repent and when we think only of ourselves and thus not care enough for others — come and enlighten us with your Spirit. Amen.

Priest: O find us, O great and loving Savior. Rescue us from personal choices that keep us away from Your grace. Grant us Your wisdom that we may discern wrong from right. Train us to always recognize Your voice when You speak in our hearts. Amen.

  11. Responsorial (Psalm 85) (Verses 9-14)
The response is: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Would that I hear God's proclamation, that he promise peace to his people, his saints — lest they come back to their folly. Yet his salvation is near to those who fear him, and his Glory will dwell in our land.

Love and faithfulness have met; righteousness and peace have embraced. Faithfulness will reach up from the earth while justice bends down from heaven.

The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its fruit. Justice will go before him, and peace will follow along his path.

  12. This is the Kyrie for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
Priest: Lord, you want our misery to be over and to lead us out of the prison of sin. Lord, have mercy.
    Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: Lord, you let your sun of righteousness shine on us with its healing rays. Christ, have mercy.
    Congregation: Christ, have mercy.

Priest: Lord, you came to give us a new heart and to put a new spirit in us. Lord, have mercy.
    Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Have mercy on us Lord, and forgive us all our sins. Keep our hopes alive that with us you want to build a better world. Lead us on the long road to everlasting life. Amen.

  13. This is the Opening Prayer for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom, gain us admittance to his company, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  14. Be pleased, O Lord, with our humble prayers and offerings, and since we have no merits to plead our cause, come, we pray, to our rescue with the protection of your mercy, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  15. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For he assumed at his first coming the lowliness of human flesh, and so fulfilled the design you formed long ago, and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, that, when he comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest, we who watch for that day may inherit the great promise in which now we dare to hope. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven as we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)

  18. Replenished by the food of spiritual nourishment, we humply beseech you, O Lord, that through our partaking in this mystery, you may teach us to judge wisely the things of earth and hold firm to the things of heaven, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  19. We are people who look forward to a better world, peace among men, no more violence and war but friendship, sharing and justice. Amen.
We also look forward to a better Church, renewed, credible and reliable, without polarizing factions. Amen.
This is certainly God's work, for our failures of the past are proof enough that we alone cannot succeed. Amen.
And yet, God has given into our hands the task of rebuilding the Church and the world. We can do it if we do it with Christ, if he is alive in our hearts and our deeds. Amen.
May you prepare the way for his full coming with the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Let us go with the certainty that Christ will be with us these days. Thanks be to God.

  25. Celebrating the new tide season, always light up my life. Simple pleasures are made special too, when they share it with you. Looking through, some old photographs, faces and friends, we will always remember. Walking busy shoppers rushing about, in the cool breeze of December, sparkling lights, all over town. Children's carols in the air, by the Christmas tree, a shower of star dust on your hair.

  29. Primera Lectura (Isaías 40: 1–5 y 9–11)
Una lectura del libro del profeta Isaías.
Consuelen, dice Yahvé, tu Dios, consuelen a mi pueblo.

    1. Bacaan Injil (Markus 1: 1–8)
Pembacaan dari Injil kudus menurut Santo Markus.
Inilah permulaan Injil tentang Yesus Kristus, Anak Allah.
